One of the first
instructions to teenagers suffering from acne is to stop having junk
food and oily food. The harried teenagers, who are willing to do
anything to get rid of acne, do so also. But does diet affect acne?
It does so, but only indirectly. Teenagers will continue to suffer
from acne whether they eat chips, pizzas or chocolates or have soft
drinks. It is a common misconception that has run through
generations though there is no conclusive evidence that states that
high calorie food is a major cause for acne.
In fact, chocolates are nutritionally rich and are now considered
strong antidepressants. They are known to stimulate the release of
serotonin which actually curbs the growth of acne. It is only excess
of junk food that is not healthy. It may result in accumulation of
fat, increase in weight and hypertension, and indirectly spur acne
growth.
But a healthy, nutritious and well balanced diet can certainly
reduce the incidence of acne outbreaks. Elements like zinc,
magnesium, and selenium are found to be effective in preventing
acne. Other than that our body also requires small quantities of
vitamin A, C, E and vitamin B complex. We also need to supplement
our daily diet with essential fatty acids.
All these aid in the proper functioning of the various systems in
our body especially the immune system. Proper intake of minerals and
vitamins boosts our immune levels rendering us resistant to
microbial infections. The skin also acquires a natural tone and is
healthier.
Studies have shown that zinc supplements have the same effect on
controlling acne outbreaks as that of tetracycline. It has important
catalytic properties and is a prerequisite for most enzymatic
reactions; also, its strong antiviral properties help in
strengthening the immune system.
The trace element selenium has been used effectively for treatment
of acne scars. It lowers the number of flare-ups especially among
those who suffer from severe acne. High protein foods like meat,
poultry and fish are found to be rich in selenium. Cereals, grains,
mushrooms and garlic are also a rich source of selenium.
Vitamin A helps in maintaining the lining of the membranes
especially the mucous membranes. It also controls hormone production
in the body. But excess dosage of vitamin A can be toxic to the body
because it is a fat soluble vitamin and tends to accumulate in the
fatty tissues.
Green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits should always be included in
one’s daily diet since they are rich in antioxidants and minerals.
Antioxidants are required for healthy regeneration of cells.
